Copyright law is a perpetual revolving door dedicated to making sure Disney owns the copyrights to well, I was going to say Mickey Mouse, but screw it. Copyright law exists nowadays so that Disney can own everything.
Except, a healthy public domain is a good and useful thing for our culture. Hell, most of my work relies at least at some level on the public domain, whether it’s my Stardust or Big Red McLane comics, or my zombie short stories (thanks George Romero, for forgetting the copyright notice in Night of the Living Dead) or even older things, like mythology and the bible.
And unlike most other artists I’ll put my money where my mouth is. I already license everything on this website under a Creative Commons license, but I want to do more than that. And I think it’s insane that copyright extends for the life of the author plus like a hundred years.
So I’m releasing all my work into the pubic domain fourteen years after first publication. The reason for this? A while back a researcher crunched some numbers and decided fourteen years is the optimal copyright term. Who am I to argue with logic, as opposed to YER NOT TRYIN’ TA STEAL MY MICKEY MOUSE IS YEH? ALSO, I BOUGHT OUT THE RIGHTS TO YER MA!
